Why do I prefer 1:1 over group programs?
Whether private one-on-one sessions or group work is more effective often comes down to personal preference, but in my own experience, I’ve found 1:1 interactions to be far more impactful. That’s not to say I don’t see value in group settings—I’m currently involved in three different group programs myself. However, the results I’ve achieved through individual work with guides (i.e. therapists, coaches, mentors, or instructors) have consistently surpassed what I’ve experienced in group environments.
One major con of 1:1 is the higher ticket price, but I gotta say, often the benefits far outweigh this “con” (what is really a fair exchange, not a downside!). I’ll attempt to break down the main reasons why I think 1:1 work is so much more effective than group.
1. Privacy
Working 1:1 creates a safe, confidential space where you can openly share your thoughts, feelings, and challenges without fear of judgment or comparison. This level of privacy fosters trust and allows for deeper, more honest conversations.
It’s especially beneficial for sensitive topics or when you’re exploring personal struggles that you might not feel comfortable discussing in a group setting.
As an introvert I prefer smaller groups anyways, but when it comes to private matters that I’m deep in the mess of, it’s hard enough opening up to another person let alone a whole group of strangers on the internet.
2. Individual Support
Undivided attention is hard to find in a world of digital clutter and distractions. When the support is individual, highly personalized, and attentive, it allowing for immediate feedback, adjustments, and encouragement tailored specifically to you.
The worst feeling in the world is trying to fight for the attention of the mentor or coach when you’re going though it. It only gets more chaotic with a group of 20+ others all vying for attention for their own issues.
3. Focus, without the noise.
Without the distractions of a group dynamic, the session can be entirely focused on your progress, questions, and goals. This leads to more efficient and effective outcomes.
In group dynamics sometimes there is comparison, especially if the industry or subject matter is competitive (like when profit or money is involved). As they say, comparison is the thief of joy.
1:1’s ensure quality airtime is given to you and spent on topics or exercises that are relevant to your journey. No stray opinions from the peanut gallery!
4. Less overwhelm (Cleaner Energetic Container)
Group settings can sometimes feel overwhelming due to the energy of multiple people and their energies, competing needs, or the pressure to keep up with others’ progress.
In a 1:1 setting, the container is calmer and more focused without the noise and chatter of others’ thoughts. If you are prone to overthinking, group work sometimes adds to that chatter.
(Especially true if you are more introverted:) a cleaner energetic container can help you feel more grounded and present, making it easier to absorb insights and take meaningful action.
On the other side of this, as a medium, I often receive messages that are specific for a single client. So having a dedicated 1:1 space to relay such messages can be a profound part of your journey. Speaking of…
5. Tailored solutions
The guidance that you get from 1:1 is customized to your habits, goals, intentions, strengths, and areas for growth. Every session is relevant and impactful for your unique path.
In group settings or in online courses, the practioner or instructor doesn’t know you personally nor your situation in depth. They don’t know your values, your strength, your weaknesses, your blindspots, unless it’s the generic industry-relevant ones.
With a 1:1 coach or mentor, there is a much deeper knowledge of YOU the individual and your situation. They can also tailor their advice or allow for more intuitive insights to flow through and work though it together in a much more humanizing way. That kind of personalization just isn’t possible in group and its non-existent in an un-moderated online course.
6. Deeper Self-Awareness
You’re more likely to uncover blind spots, limiting beliefs, or subconscious patterns and work though the sticky parts with more self-awareness in a 1:1 container, and often this is done in realtime.
This deeper level of insight can lead to transformative breakthroughs and long-lasting change, sometimes surpassing both parties’ expectations!
7. Flexibility and Adaptability
1:1 work allows for greater flexibility in scheduling, pacing, and content. Sessions can be adjusted in real-time based on your energy, mood, or immediate needs. If something isn’t working or you want to explore a new direction, the approach can be quickly adapted without disrupting others.
8. Accountability
Working closely with someone creates a strong sense of accountability. They can help you stay on track with your goals, celebrate your wins, and gently nudge you when you’ve fallen off the wagon. They also can see if you’re hiding, encouraging you to show up unconditionally.
Unfortunately in group work or self-guided containers like online courses, it’s easier to fall off the wagon. Abandonment rates are abysmal because the programmatic bumpers simply don’t exist for personalized support. By design, 1:1 containers mitigate this problem.
Accountability is often more elusive in group settings, where as in 1:1 settings, its much more of a natural part of the coaching/mentorship process because it’s rooted in a trusting relationship with less places to hide or lurk. Sure the group chat is fired up at all times, but even more reason you can remain hidden in the shadows. While there’s nothing inherently wrong with hiding, it’s this very behavior that keeps us stuck. When the going get tough, we tend to trade breakthrough for camouflage and comfort.
9. Accelerated, Compounding Progress
With all the focus, support, and customization, progress often happens more quickly in a 1:1 setting. You’re not waiting for others to catch up (or vice versa), navigating group dynamics, so you can progress at your own pace.
The intensity of the work can lead to faster insights, skill development, and reaching your goals faster because of the laser focus.
10. Stronger Relationship and Trust
Over time, working 1:1 builds a strong, trusting relationship between you and the guide (mentor, coach, therapist, etc.)
Trust is built up over time and it makes a world of difference when you are working though precarious or confusing circumstances.
In group settings, that relationship is more parasocial, rather than intimate. Group settings create a sense of connection that is based in the “hive mind” but that might not be what’s most helpful for what you need for your personal path.
1:1 work fosters emotional safety essential for vulnerability. You’re more likely to take risks, ask for the help you really need, be less performative in a safe space than say, a group of others who you might feel compelled to present yourself in a certain way around.
When you feel truly supported an individual level, much more subconscious wrinkles can be smoothed out when you feel more psychological safety.
All to say, 1:1 is the pinnacle of self-development work that I swear by.
This is also why most of my services are 1:1. It is a best kept secret that I want and need everyone to know about! Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on this topic too. Which do you prefer?
